Have you always wanted a pet bird that’s bright and colourful, intelligent and playful? While there are plenty of species that fit the list, the Lory ticks all those boxes and more! Here’s what you need to know about this beautiful species of bird, including everything you could want to know about keeping them.
Is a Lory a Lorikeet?
You might think that a lory and a lorikeet are the same bird but in actuality there is a difference! Lories have short tails while lorikeets have longer tails. There are actually several different species of lories that you can keep as a pet bird but generally speaking, they are predominantly red in colour with bright patches of yellow, purple and green. The actual coloration will depend on the species you choose.
Do Lories Make Good Pets?
If you’re after an interactive pet bird, the lory is an excellent choice as their high intelligence means that they are very easy to train. You can train them to do a whole range of tricks or even teach them how to talk. Lories are also very playful and curious birds, so when they’re out of their cage, don’t be surprised if they’re wandering all over the house getting into everything! When they’re in their cage, don’t forget to give them lots of toys to play with.
One thing that you definitely need to be aware of is the fact that lories may not be the best choice for dense urban living. This is because they have quite a loud screech and your neighbours may find that annoying, especially if you end up with a bird that likes to “talk” late at night or early in the morning.
Looking After a Lory
If you’ve got a lory, you’ll want to take the best care of it you possibly can. You can start by getting a large cage – the larger the better. Make sure the cage is made out of strong, chew proof materials and that it is filled with perches, toys and bird games. The lory is not a bird that you can leave in the cage all day so be sure to also bird proof your house and let your lory out for exercise and play time for a few hours each day.
When it comes to feeding the lory, you can give it liquid nectars, fruits and vegetables. Lories love nectar and you’ll need to feed them on either a dry nectar mix or a wet nectar mix. These are designed as a replacement for the nectar that they’ll naturally eat in the wild. Examples of fruits and vegetables that you can feed include apples, grapes, rockmelon, leafy greens, corn on the cob, and edible flowers such as nasturtiums, roses and hibiscus. Just like any other pet, give your bird fresh water each day and keep the water bottle or tray clean.
It should be noted that the lory is actually quite a messy bird to keep. This is because they feed on a predominantly liquid and fruit and vegetable diet, giving them messy droppings that can spray around the cage and even spray straight out of it! What this means for you is cleaning and lots of it, as the cage needs to be kept clean and free of dropping to stop your pet lory from getting sick. If you’re not prepared to clean the cage daily (which is often necessary), this isn’t the bird for you.
