Rabbits can make wonderful pets and can be a great addition to any family. But with so many breeds to choose from how do you decide which breed is best for you?
Choosing a Rabbit Breeder
Rabbit breeders are a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the type of rabbit they breed. Many breeders also show their rabbits at competitions. Begin by researching the different rabbit breeds and then make a shortlist of the breeds you like. You can contact rabbit breeders who keep your favourite breeds through your local Rabbit Breeders Association.
Choose a breeder who has good knowledge of their breed, who is happy for you to visit your potential pet rabbit and who keeps their animals clean and healthy.
Questions to Ask the Rabbit Breeder
Questions to ask the breeder may vary slightly depending on the breed of rabbit however some important questions you should ask the breeder are:
- Is this breed prone to any health problems? Some purebred animals are more prone to health problems.
- Does my rabbit come with pedigree papers? Pedigree papers are more important if you want to breed and show your rabbit.
- Will my rabbit be wormed, vaccinated, micro-chipped and de-sexed? Some breeders will sell their rabbits with all or none of these procedures having been done.
- Will my rabbit be socialised to people and the home environment? Early socialisation is very important if you want your rabbit to be a calm and relaxed family member. Vacuum cleaners and brooms can be scary!
- Does this breed have any special care requirements? Long-haired varieties can require regular grooming.
If you do your research and ask the right questions you are sure to make the right decision when choosing your new pet rabbit.
