How to Use Grooming Clippers
Part of responsible pet ownership is ensuring that your pet remains well groomed.  Whether it’s using grooming clippers on your pet’s hair or your pet’s nails, here’s what you need to know.

Using Clippers to Groom Your Pet

If you wish to groom your pet at home using a pair of clippers, the first thing that you will need to do is to buy a specialty pair of grooming clippers.  This is important as normal human clippers are not strong enough to grip your pet’s hair.  Make sure that your pet clippers come with snap on combs, a coolant and lubricant for the blade, and scissors.  There are different varieties available so talk to your vet, groomer, or local pet store sales associate to find out which one is best suited for your particular pet.  Generally, you will want clippers that are quiet, and that are powerful enough for the thickness of your pet’s coat.

Before you start using the clippers, it is a good idea to brush your pet’s coat to make sure that it is clean and free of tangles.  If you do come across minor matts, use the scissors to gently snip them out. Major matts should be taken care of by a professional.  You can then use the clippers to start trimming the coat.  Begin in an inconspicuous area and ensure that you are holding the clippers comfortably and on a slight angle.  Clip the fur in short, straight lines, being sure to shake the excess fur off the blade in between strokes.  It is generally accepted that you start at the back of the pet and work your way up to its face.  Do not clip the face, tail, or paws.

During the grooming process, it is important to regularly test the blade to make sure that it is not getting too hot. Place the blade against your wrist to test the temperature.  If it is hot, replace the blade, or allow it to cool down before continuing.  You can also use the special coolant that comes with them.  Using the clippers in short bursts can help to prevent overheating.

How to Use Pet Nail Clippers

Part of your pet’s grooming routine is often to clip their nails down to a comfortable and manageable length, and take the sharp edges off!  This is best done using a pair of pet nail clippers.  Choose a pair that has rubber grips and a rounded top for safety.  Use the clippers to cut off no more than just the tip of your pet’s nails.  Never cut close to the quick or you may cause your pet’s nails to bleed, and you’ll have a devil of a time trying to clip their nails again! Cutting off just the tip shortens them enough and will take away the sharp edges.
