Making your pet an Instagram star

Due to its ease of use, visual nature and ability to expose thousands of people to your posts, making your pet an Instagram star is something every pet owner has the potential to do! Social media for pets (social petworking) continues to boom. Instagram in particular has become a popular platform for pet owners, with thousands of pets now having their own accounts.

Setting up your Instagram account

Instagram is a fairly easy platform to use. By Simply downloading the app, you can take pictures and start posting photographs. To get started, think about the name of the account. Try to use something easy to say, spell and remember. For example, ‘Moggy the cat’ or simply the name of your pet. If you use their species in the name as well, that can help bring more people to the account.

Posting pictures of your pet

Instagram is a visual social media platform. This means that posts are done by sharing photographs, as well as videos. Before you get started, have a look the Instagram accounts of other popular pets such as @hamilton_the_hispter_cat or @venustwofacecat. These accounts are popular because the pets have a certain angle that the pet owner is sharing. This may be how the pet looks or their behaviour for example. If you can find an angle for your pet, it will help create photographs that fit into a theme. Other Instagram users will soon know what to expect, and keep coming back for more!

Using pet hashtags

If you haven’t heard of ‘hashtags’, it’s a good idea to have a look at other accounts to become familiar with them. Hashtags are the words included in a post, with the hashtag symbol before it. For example: #dogs. Hashtags are way of grouping posts together. If you have a maltese terrier and include the hashtag, #malteseterrier at the end of your post, other Instagram users searching for ‘maltese terriers’ in Instagram, are more likely to see your post. This is a great way to increase the exposure of your pet.

Remember it’s all about your pet

If you decide to start an Instagram account for your pet, make sure it’s always about them. People will follow the account because they want to see your pet. Whether they are cute, funny, coy, or whatever it is, make sure the images show this.

Making your pet an Instagram star can take time. Be consistent with your posts (ideally a minimum of one a day). Try not to force the images or videos. Capturing pets behaving how they really are or genuinely look, is always going to a winner. Pet lovers want to see your pet for who they are and how they behave – keep it real, and in time you’re sure to have people loving your pet as much as you do!
