With their quirky looks and loving personality, the French Bulldog is the ultimate lapdog or companion pet. Here’s what you need to know.
Characteristics of the French Bulldog
The French Bulldog is a small to medium, compact and muscular dog standing up to 13 inches high. The coat colour comes in brindle, pied, white, fawn, or a combination of these. The coat itself is short, lies closely to the body, and is smooth and finely textured. One of the most distinctive features of the French Bulldog is their short snout and their bat like ears.
The French Bulldog Temperament
The French Bulldog is primarily a companion pet and thus it is playful and affectionate, and has an extremely good nature. They are also very intelligent and trainable, and are at their happiest when they are with their human families. The French Bulldog is great with children and gets along well with other pets. To get the most out of your dog, basic training is recommended. The French Bulldog has a great sense of humour and it is often regarded as being clown like.
Caring for a French Bulldog
Because the French Bulldog has such a short coat, grooming is very easy. You can brush them regularly or you can simply rub down the coat daily with a rough cloth. Bathing should be done only when necessary. The French Bulldog is relatively hardy but they can suffer from breathing problems due to their short nose, and they can also suffer from eye injuries and skin problems. Heat stroke can affect these dogs so you should take care not to let them get too hot. Only routine exercise (such as a daily walk) is necessary. You also have to tend to their nails and teeth to keep them in optimal condition. The French Bulldog will live for 10 years on average but can live for 12 years or more with plenty of love and a good diet.
Who is the French Bulldog Suited To?
The French Bulldog is suited to people or families that are looking for a dog that will truly be a part of their family. The French Bulldog loves a lot of attention from their owners so they are best suited to owners that want an interactive, involved dog. They do well in all environments, from houses through to small apartments but they love nothing more than being indoors with their family. They are not an outdoor dog.
