Welcome to Keen 4 Kritters

Hi my name is Tyson Keen.

Reptiles have fascinated me ever since I was small. It first started with Dinosaurs then my dad got me interested in snakes. One year later I got my first snake.

I have been keeping reptiles for eight years now and in that time I have acquired 14 different species of reptile which I have been trying to breed. It all started with one Stimsons python, then mountain dragon then Central Netteds before I knew it I had started a decent collection.

I now have a concrete shed which I keep all my reptiles in. It is 7M long x3M Wide x2M high.

How to decide on your new pet

The first thing to do is decide what you want. The 2 major choices are lizards and snakes. Snakes are great when small because they require very little room. Some species don't grow very big at all. Snakes are also good because they only need to be fed every 5 days or so (when growing or coming into breeding season) During winter some species of snake do not eat at all.

Lizards are more interactive and curious however they do need a larger space (for the size of the animal). They need to be feed at least once a day. (when smaller must be fed multiple times a day)

After you have decided what you want you must then set-up a tank according to your species needs. You should also make sure that you will have room for when you scaly friend grows up. It is very important that you research beforehand instead of going out and spontaneously buying something you know nothing about.

But before you go out to buy a little Kritter you must go you and get a license. This can take up to two weeks so its important you get this before enquiringly about animals. In NSW all reptiles are protected and require a license to keep them. Licenses are extremely important because it stops people going and poaching animals. Poaching animals can destroy a whole ecosystem. Even when poaching just a single animal can wreak everything. That could be the only male or female in the area which takes a lot of time to repair. The money that the DECC receives goes towards catching poachers and keeping our bushland healthy.
