Chinese Crested Dog Breeders

If you are after a small dog that loves to spend time with you and that looks exotic, you may find that the Chinese Crested Dog is the perfect dog for you.  Here’s what you need to know.

Characteristics of the Chinese Crested Dog

The Chinese Crested Dog is a toy breed of dog and as such they are very small and light.  The Chinese Crested Dog can have a full coat of fur (known as the Powderpuff variety) but they are most commonly seen in a hairless variety.  This is where the dog only has fur on the head, giving them the characteristic “crest” for which they are named, as well as fur on the socks of their feet and the lower two thirds of their tail.

The Chinese Crested Dog Temperament

The Chinese Crested Dog is known as being a confident, graceful and alert dog.  It can be very strong willed but it is never aggressive or snappy.    The Chinese Crested Dog gets along well with other pets.  They are an intelligent breed of dog and thus require constant training throughout their lifetime to ensure that they are well behaved.  Their energy also means that they need regular exercise.  The Chinese Crested Dog is also an excellent lap dog as it forms a very close bond with their owners but they are wary of strangers.  They are good with children but they prefer children that are gentle with them.

Caring for the Chinese Crested Dog

The Chinese Crested Dog is not the dog for you if you are looking for a low maintenance dog.  The furred variety has a long, silky coat that needs to be regularly groomed in order to keep it in top condition.  The hairless variety requires even more maintenance as you need to regularly bath the dog, and even moisturise it as needed.  Because there is no hair to protect the skin, you will need to apply sunscreen when the dog is outdoors so that the skin does not burn.  Both varieties of the Chinese Crested Dog are sensitive to the cold and as such, will need to wear jackets or coats when the weather is cool.  The Chinese Crested Dog will live for 10 years on average but it can live for 12 years or longer if given lots of tender loving care and a good diet.

Who is the Chinese Crested Dog Suited To?

The Chinese Crested Dog is best suited to owners that are looking for a lap dog but that are still willing to give the dog the exercise that it needs.  They can fit in to families well if the children are gentle and loving.  Because these dogs require a lot of care and maintenance, they need owners that are willing to spend the time doing this, and that will spend plenty of time with them.  They are not suited to being outdoor dogs left alone for periods of time.
