Chow Chow Breeders

If you are after a dog that is noble and almost teddy bear like in appearance and that is happy and devoted to its family, the Chow Chow is the dog for you.  Here’s everything you need to know about this fascinating breed.

Characteristics of the Chow Chow

The Chow Chow is a medium to large breed of dog that weighs up to 32 kilograms and stands up to 56 cm tall at the shoulder.  They are quite stocky in build.  An extremely distinctive characteristic of this breed of dog is its blue-black tongue (bears also have a blue-black tongue).  They also have quite a “bear-like” appearance. The Chow Chow’s coat is medium in length and quite fluffy in appearance. It can be smooth or rough coated and comes in colours including black, blue, cinnamon, cream and red.  The rough coat is longer and thus will require more maintenance. Another feature of this breed of dog is the lion like mane around their neck.

The Chow Chow Temperament

Even though the Chow Chow can often look “scowly”, it is actually a very happy, devoted dog.  It is a great family companion as it gives its family all of its love and affection.  However, they are also quite an independent dog so they won’t necessarily pay attention to strangers or to people that come to the house to visit.  The Chow Chow can get along well with other pets but it is best to bring the dog up with the pets from a young age.  The Chow Chow is also a very intelligent dog and a fast learner, so it will benefit a lot from regular and consistent training.  Training is necessary to stop the dog from becoming dominant and territorial.

Caring for the Chow Chow

The Chow Chow is not a low maintenance breed of dog as the coat needs to be brushed and combed regularly in order to remove dead hair and to keep it free of matts.  They also shed several times a year so frequent brushing will help to control this.   However, it is a very clean breed of dog and it will even wash its face after it’s eaten!  The Chow Chow will usually live for around 8 years on average but they can live for 10 years or more with a good diet and lots of tender loving care.

Who is the Chow Chow Best Suited To?

The Chow Chow is suited to both individual owners and families and it is happy to live in any conditions, including apartments as long as it gets plenty of exercise. However, it is happiest in a backyard where it has some room to run around.
