Fox Terrier Breeders

If you are after a small dog that has more personality than you can shake a stick at, you’d be incredibly hard pressed to look past the Fox Terrier.  Here’s everything you need to know about this delightful breed.

Characteristics of the Fox Terrier

The Fox Terrier is a smallish breed of dog standing around 38cm tall at the shoulder and weighing up to 8kg.  They are very trim, and they have a long tail that is docked (though docking is becoming less common these days) and very intelligent, dark eyes.  There are two main types of Fox Terrier – the smooth coated variety and the wire coated variety.  Colour wise, the coat is white with black or tan markings.

The Fox Terrier Temperament

The Fox Terrier is a breed with a huge personality.  They are happy, fearless, and clown like dog, with bundles of enthusiasm.  They are also very intelligent and this intelligence means that they can absolutely excel at training.  However, on the other side of the coin, their intelligence also means that they grow bored easily so they need to have plenty of toys, exercise and attention.  They are excellent watch dogs and will alert you of anyone coming.  Fox Terriers are also known for being incredibly curious, and will get into anything and everything.  However, Fox Terriers are very devoted to their families and are happiest when they are near their owners.

Caring for the Fox Terrier

The amount of grooming that your Fox Terrier needs will depend on what type of coat it has.  The smooth coated variety do not require much in the way of grooming at all – just a regular brushing and a bath as needed.  The wire coated variety however needs to be clipped about four times a year or so, and they need to be brushed very regularly.  They are a very energetic dog and will need to be walked daily at a minimum to keep them happy and healthy.  The Fox Terrier generally lives for 12 years or so but it can live for 14 years or more when given a good diet and lots of love and attention.

Who is the Fox Terrier Suited To?

The Fox Terrier makes an ideal pet for families, kids, and active older people that are happy to enjoy their dog’s antics.  While the Fox Terrier can be an indoor or outdoor dog, they do need a securely fenced yard for when they are outside.  They are not dogs that can be left alone for long periods of time as they can turn into problem barkers if they feel neglected.  They are a companion dog.
