Golden Retriever Breeders

It is no surprise that the Golden Retriever is one of the most popular breeds of dog in the world with its good looks and even better personality.  They really are the ideal family dog.  Here’s what you need to know.

Characteristics of the Golden Retriever

The Golden Retriever is a medium to large dog that stands between 51cm and 61cm high and weigh up to 37kg.  They are best known for their beautiful coat which is wavy, double, and water resistant.  The colour of the coat is the defining characteristic and the colours range from shades of cream right through to a deep gold colour.

The Golden Retriever Temperament

The Golden Retriever is a very intelligent, affectionate, and sociable dog.  They are very adaptable and have a willing nature, and they are also very trainable.  In fact, Golden Retrievers are commonly used as guide dogs for the blinds, as therapy pets, as a show dog, in obedience training and more.  It is important that you give your Golden Retriever at least basic training in order to strengthen the bond between pet and owner, and also to teach it good manners and the appropriate responses.  They accept other pets extremely well.

Caring for a Golden Retriever

Even though it is a long haired breed, it is very easy to care for a Golden Retriever as you only need to give them a brush regularly to stop the coat from matting.  Bathing should only be done as necessary.  The Golden Retriever may suffer from hip dysplasia and some eye complaints but a good breeder will do their best to ensure that this is not a problem in their puppies.  You should be careful not to let your Golden Retriever become overweight as this can affect their joints.

The Golden Retriever will generally live for around 11 years on average but it can live for 13 years or more with good food and plenty of loving attention.

Who is the Golden Retriever Suited To?

The Golden Retriever is perfect for families that are looking for a dog that has a very loving and gentle disposition.  They are best suited to households that give them room to run around the backyard, and the owner should be willing to exercise the dog daily to keep its weight in check.   Because the Golden Retriever is such a sociable dog, they require companionship. Therefore, if you will be away from the home for long periods of time, you may want to have two dogs instead of just the one.
