Oriental Shorthair Cat Breeders

The Oriental Shorthair is a part of the Siamese family and as such, they are loving, cheeky, and mischievous companions.  If you’d love to own one of these loyal little bundles of energy, here’s what you need to know.

Characteristics of the Oriental Shorthair

The Oriental Shorthair is a long, svelte cat with a long, whippy tail.  They have an angular, wedge shaped head with large, flaring ears and almond shaped eyes.  The coat is very fine in texture and feels like satin.  It is short and lies close to the body.  Unlike the Siamese which is only available in pointed patterns, the Oriental Shorthair can be one of 300 different colours and patterns, including solid, parti colour, smoke, shaded, tabby, bi colour, and so on.

The Oriental Shorthair Personality

The Oriental Shorthair is a playful and spirited cat. They have high intelligence levels and they are very affectionate and vocal. The Oriental Shorthair loves to talk to their owners about their day, and to follow their owner around.  It is not at all uncommon for an Oriental Shorthair to closely bond with one person.  As well, the Oriental Shorthair is very playful and athletic, so you will likely see them running around the home, or jumping up and down from high places.  Essentially, they are a cheeky cat with bucket loads of personality.

Caring for an Oriental Shorthair

The Oriental Shorthair is a very low maintenance breed as far as grooming goes, thanks to their short, lush coat.  All you will need to do is to give them the occasional brushing or run a damp hand over their coat to remove loose hairs.  The Oriental Shorthair is a relatively healthy cat but they can be genetically prone to gingivitis, amyloidosis, and cardiomyopathy.  You can significantly reduce the risk of problems occurring by buying your kitten from a reputable breeder. As well, you should also practice good preventative dental care, such as feeding your Oriental Shorthair raw chicken necks and wings, using a dental food, and getting their teeth regularly checked.

Who is the Oriental Shorthair Suited To?

The Oriental Shorthair is suited to any household that is looking for an active, clever, and interactive cat.  These cats require lots of company and human interaction so if you will be out for long periods of time, you should consider having another cat to keep them company.
