Pharaoh Hound Breeders

If you are an experienced dog owner that is after a striking looking dog that will fit in well with your active household, the Pharaoh Hound could be the dog for you.  Read on for more.

Characteristics of the Pharaoh Hound

The Pharaoh Hound is an elegant, lithe dog with clean lines. It stands up to 64 centimetres high at the shoulder and weighs up to 25 kilograms.  One stand out feature of the breed is its large, pointy ears.  Another is the coat which is very short and glossy and is tan or chestnut in colour.  The glossiness of the coat gives it quite a satin-y appearance. Something quite unique to the Pharaoh Hound is the dog’s ability to blush (the nose and ears darken) when they are excited or happy.

The Pharaoh Hound Temperament

The Pharaoh Hound is a dog with extreme intelligence levels so it is important that you start training your dog as soon as possible.  They can get along well with other animals but they do need to be well supervised as their hunting instincts can come out with smaller animals.  The Pharaoh Hound loves children and people and they are brave, loving, and loyal companions.  In fact, they can be quite entertaining with their clownish behaviour.  However, they are cautious of people they don’t know.

Caring for the Pharaoh Hound

The Pharaoh Hound is relatively low maintenance grooming wise and they just need to be brushed regularly to keep the coat shiny and in tip top condition.  Bathing can be done as necessary.  You will need to feed your dog a good diet to keep the coat in good condition as well as to keep the dog healthy overall.  You will also need to keep an eye on your dog’s teeth, ears, and nails.  One thing that is absolutely imperative for the Pharaoh Hound is regular, sustained exercise.  This is important to keep them both happy and healthy.

Generally speaking, the Pharaoh Hound is a very hardy breed of dog but they can be very sensitive to medicines and insecticides so you have to be very careful when using these.  The Pharaoh Hound will live for around 14 years on average.

Who is the Pharaoh Hound Suited To?

The Pharaoh Hound is not a dog for everybody due to its high levels of intelligence and so it is best suited to people that are experienced with dogs.  As well, the Pharaoh Hound requires a lot of exercise, so it needs to be in quite an active household with owners that are prepared to give the dog the necessary levels of exercise.
