Tenterfield Terrier Breeders

If you are after a small dog that is both friendly and active, you really cannot go past the Australian Tenterfield Terrier.  These dogs are great for kids and adults alike.  Read on for more about this great breed.

Characteristics of the Tenterfield Terrier

The Tenterfield Terrier is a small dog that stands around 27cm high and weighs around 5kg.  Appearance wise, they are often confused with the Jack Russell but they are of a finer build.  They often have their tails docked but the trend is to move away from this more and more.  The Tenterfield Terrier has a short coat that comes in black and white, tan and white, and black, tan and white.

The Tenterfield Terrier Temperament

The Tenterfield Terrier is known for being an incredibly active and friendly dog.  They are just as happy to be running around as they are being curled up on their owner’s lap.  Tenterfield Terriers are excellent with children and they also get along very well with other pets.  The Tenterfield Terrier is also a very curious and bold dog, and this can actually tend to get them into trouble (getting into things they shouldn’t etc).  As the Tenterfield Terrier can really have a mind of their own, it is a good idea to start training them from a young age using positive reinforcement methods.  Short sessions of training are recommended so the dog doesn’t become bored or distracted.

Caring for the Tenterfield Terrier

Grooming wise, the Tenterfield Terrier is a very low maintenance dog.  In fact, all you have to do is brush them occasionally to remove loose hair from the coat, and trim their nails.  You can also clean their teeth if you want to.  As they are so active, you will need to spend plenty of time with them either walking them, letting them run around, or playing with them.  They are a breed that will appreciate having lots of toys to entertain themselves with.  The Tenterfield Terrier is renowned for its long lifespan and they can live for anywhere between 12 and 20 years.

Who is the Tenterfield Terrier Suited To?

The Tenterfield Terrier is a breed of dog that is suited to singles, families and the elderly alike and they are just as happy being an indoor dog as they are being in a backyard.  Their adaptability means that they will adjust to any situation.  If they are kept in a backyard, they need to have a very secure fence as they are very curious and can tend to escape.
