Tonkinese Cat Breeders

If you are after a cheeky, playful, yet loving cat, the Tonkinese may be the perfect breed for you!  Here’s everything you need to know about these charming cats.

Characteristics of the Tonkinese

The Tonkinese cat first came about when the Burmese and Siamese cats were bred together.  The Tonkinese is a medium sized cat with good musculature.  They are known for their beautiful blue eyes and their striking, unique coat. The Tonkinese is a “mink” cat which means that they are pointed like the Siamese (coloured on the face, feet and tail), but have a body that is shaded with a colour that harmonises with the point colour.  The mink coat is available in five main colours – natural mink, blue mink, honey mink, champagne mink, and platinum mink.

The Tonkinese Temperament

The Tonkinese is known as being a very intelligent and curious cat that is both alert and playful.  They love to supervise what their “human” is doing and they also love to play games, such as hide and seek, fetch, and many more. The Tonkinese will happily invent games to amuse themselves.  They are also a breed that loves companionship and they will happily talk to you about their day, and try their hardest to get your attention if they start to feel ignored.  The Tonkinese is also quite an affectionate cat and they form close bonds with their owners.

Caring for a Tonkinese

The Tonkinese is a fairly low maintenance cat and all that you have to do grooming wise is to brush their coat weekly in order to remove any loose fur.  Like other cats, the Tonkinese can be prone to gingivitis so you should give them raw chicken necks or other treats to chew on in order to keep their teeth and gums clean and healthy.  They will happily eat a diet of canned and dry food.  The Tonkinese is known to live for up to 18 years, or even longer with plenty of TLC.

Because the Tonkinese is such an active cat, you should be sure to provide them with a scratching post and plenty of toys, so that they can entertain themselves when you are not around.

Who is the Tonkinese Suited To?

The Tonkinese is a great family cat as they get along with all members of the family very well. They are both easygoing and undemanding. However, they are active and like plenty of attention so if you will not be home much, you should think about getting them another kitty companion, so that they don’t become destructive with boredom.
